Blending Tips

Often we are asked, ‘What is a good blend?’ Blending is one of those areas where subjective tastes are given free range. If you like the taste, it’s a good blend. Experiment! There are a few standard blend types.
● Mocha Java is a very old blend of Yemen and Indonesian Java. Some roasters use an Ethiopia natural with a Sumatra as they feel it captures the original intent of the blend. Either is good.
● High caff espresso. Using robusta isn’t done just to cut costs. Using quality robusta not only adds a heavy, creamy body to espresso but has the extra caffeine kick. 10-20% robusta is the normal amount used.
● Black and tan or Viennese bend. Blending a light and dark roast of the same coffee provides a surprisingly complex but balanced blend.
● Breakfast blend is usually a medium roast of mild tasting coffees from Central and South America
