How to compare roast color

Often times, home roasters want to compare roasts.
● Posting pictures online of roasted beans is very difficult due to lighting, camera and display differences.
● A better way to compare roasts for oneself and publicly is to grind a small amount of the coffee on your finest grinder setting. Then put in a pile on a clean sheet of white paper. If you are comparing with another coffee, put a pile of it next to the first. Then with the bottom of a flat bottomed glass, smash down the grounds and polish like you would an espresso shot. The resulting color is more even and less reflective of whole bean and better indicates bean development.
